916 Auto Parts Spider Resto Thread

Hello group !!

I bought this Spider earlier in the month of June (2013)

The colour is Verde Acido Metallic. Its quite a rare colour as Alfa only painted this colour on the ph1 cars

in the UK between 1996 & 98.

My long term plan is to restore the Spider back to a decent standard and use it as a show car to promote our products.

As you can see its far from its best and needs alot of work !!

I have already found some wheels I'm thinking of fitting to it (17" Zender winners)

A few pictures of the car as it is.

Andy

The exterior certainly looks pretty good already, good base to work from. Good luck with the project.

Just giving you a little bit more information about the Spider.

I found time to take a good look at the green spider over the weekend. It turns out it has a knackered engine from too much oil in the motor. The previous owner had at some point fitted a shorter dipstick by mistake, I guess from either a 1.6 or a 1.8 TS.

He rebuilt the head once after the valves bent and didn't work out what the problem was even when it happened again !!

I have another good used 2.0L engine to fit just to get the car mobile.

I plan to lighten & balance the bottom end with new shells and piston ring, I will also rebuild the top end at and fit at a later date.

Next update will be engine stripdown to make room for the used unit....

Will you be doing the work yourself Andy?

The acid green Spider is waiting patiently for the good used engine to be fitted. I'm not a million miles away from starting the stripdown of the original engine that is in the car.

I've finished unbolting the dona engine and the car can be lifted away to reveal the lump on a pallet.

My Proteo Spider is finally painted and looking clean.

I think the acid green Spiders are becoming increasingly rare as they were only produced over 2/3 years !!

Its good that this 1 is being saved and put back on the road  B)

Both Spiders look nice :) . You have to install the wheels from the first post on, personally I don't like these original alfa romeo wheels. I see two Spider with this color and both are from UK, is that specific color for UK market? I think that haven't seen 916 with this color in my country.

I didn't see any GTVs or Spiders in Bulgaria when I spent a bit of time in Sofia a few years back, most of the lads there were driving SLK Mercs or something similar.

I'm pretty sure the acid green colour was offered to the european market as I've seen a lefty in this colour.

I agree with you about the wheels the 17s will look much better

I'm having oil pressure problems with my proteo red Spider's engine at the moment, it could be something simple like a blocked oil pick up. The top end has been starved of oil and acquired a little tap  :(  So the spare engine is being rebuilt with head work and fast road cams fitted. The block will be rebuilt and refitted it the red car. The engine I take out of the red spider with 3K miles on it will be checked and problem fixed then fitted in the acid green Spider.

Plans change, all will be good in the end

The proteo Spider looks like new!

Anyway, it would be cool to keep it original with those ugly 16" wheels. :)

Good luck with the new one!

Cheers CHARLEE.

I like your trail of thought there !!

I hadn't really thought of a direction to take the car just wanting to get it up & running first. But a good standard car is always a winner in my book. Especially seeing as the proteo Spider has uprated parts on it.

Hmmm, food for thought

Well it makes sense as its a rare colour and is already standard. Getting 19" wheels, lowering the car, etc is ok, but if I would do a rebuild of a rare car, I'd try to get it to a perfect stock/standard shape.
