Enrico Fumia, interview, 2012

I would like to share some insights from my interview with Mr Fumia.

“Well, about Spider/Gtv interior, it was designed by Centro Stile Alfa Romeo under Mr.De Silva direction. [...] On the contrary, the Pininfarina’s proposal was absolutely innovative …if it had been developed.”

“I did my original renderings on Sept.’87. The final model was approved by Mr.Ghidella (CEO Fiat) on July ’88. Since that time, Centro Stile Alfa Romeo (leaded by Mr.De Silva) got the model for designing the interior. So, the show car Proteo (at Geneve ’91) was influenced by my design and not viceversa as everybody think [...] Anyway, the Spider-Gtv design is my 100% own idea. [...] Fiat commissioned proposals for Spider/Gtv. Also to Bertone. At that time Fiat CEO was Mr. [Vittorio] Ghidella. ”

“[...] the 164 is my own design. On the contrary, its design comes from a previous project called 154. I designed 154 in 1981, one year before 164 and it arrived at the 1:1 model stage. It liked so much to AR management (not yet Fiat!) that in 1982 it was asked to shift its shape onto the 164, based on Tipo4 chassis (common to Fuiat Croma, Lancia Thema amd SAAB 9000, all designed by Mr.Giugiaro). I really like Testarossa (designed by Mr.[Diego] Ottina). Honestly I don’t see any connection between it and 164.”

“My most favourite car-design is (and I think it’ll be forever) the Citroen DS. It represents the only sample of what Innovation must be. Its shape (in and out) is a sort of visible advertising of the real innovation was inside and outside the body. Scaglione’s SS and 33 are a nice cars, of course. But nothing compared with DS. I think that every True Designer should like to have imagined DS.”

- Enrico Fumia, interview, 2012

“My deep regret is F90 is still a mysterious car. So, I’ll do my best in the future to fully unveil that – let me say – wonderful car. I hope F90 will finally appear soon in one of the Concours d’Elegance in the world. But …it depends on the Sultan of Brunei! In the book I am preparing all my cars will be explained. So …wait for it!”
